Themes and message

The main themes explored in the essay “Stability in Motion” are that of transformation and teenage life. Marina Keegan maps her teenage experiences which transform and shape her identity using the motif of her first car, an old Camry passed down to her by her grandmother. The author’s message is that more often than not, the things we own (in this case, the car) can become a vivid reflection of our personalities and the transformations we go through if one is willing to notice them.

The essay begins by presenting the obvious contrast between the speaker and her grandmother, reflected in the Toyota Camry. When the car belonged to the grandmother, it reflected the woman’s discipline and stability: “The black exterior remained glossy and spotless, the beige interior crisp and pristine. Tissues were disposed of, seats vacuumed, and food prohibited.” (ll. 24-28)
