Literary period

Published in 1979, the short story “Solo Dance” by Jayne Anne Phillips fits the literary movement we call Minimalism and what is sometimes considered a variation of it, Dirty Realism. Minimalist works are recognised through their minimal use of words, and the less specific manner in which the events and the characters are described, inviting readers to interpret the details in the story to figure out its meaning In “Solo Dance”, we recognise the minimalistic style in the brief narration and the simple language that the author uses in her story.

The short story does not give readers straightforward characterisations or a clear depiction of the meaning of the events, a feature which is typical for minimalist works. Instead, various hints are given about the action and the characters, leaving readers to interpret the characters’ traits, roles, and intentions in the story.
