Summary

“Solo Dance” tells the story of a woman who comes back home to be with her father, who has cancer and is in the hospital.

The woman reads get-well cards out loud to her father and helps him with small tasks like shaving and combing his hair. Her mother and father have been divorced for two years, but the father keeps mentioning the divorce and expresses frustration about the legal details of it.

The woman says nothing and instead observes her father’s appearance. In her childhood, the woman took ballet lessons. During her first class, she tried not to cry when the teacher placed her leg in a painful ballet position.

The father asks the woman about her mother, and comments on her mental state and behaviour, before finally noting that the mother achieved her desire to be alone....
