Interpretation

The play Othello by William Shakespeare explores several complex themes. The play deals with issues such as jealousy, appearance versus reality, and love and hate. Through the character of Othello, who is a Moorish general, the play also tackles themes such as racism and isolation.

The play makes use of symbols that are of particular significance as they influence the course of action and foreshadow the tragic ending. The handkerchief, for example, offers a symbolic interpretation of Desdemona and Othello’s changing relationship, while the storm that occurs when Othello arrives in Cyprus foreshadows the disasters that will take place there.

The play can be considered to have several messages, depending on how we interpret it. One of the most important message can be a warning against the dangers of jealousy and of losing control.
