The article “Only Love and Then Oblivion” by Ian McEwan was written as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As an immediate response to the 9/11 attacks, the US started what was known as the War on Terror. George Bush, then president of the United States, gave a speech arguing in favor of attacking countries that openly supported terrorist organizations. This led to the War in Afghanistan and, later, Iraq. 

On July 7, 2005, took place a series of coordinated attacks on the London public transport system. These attacks were also claimed by the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, believed to be responsible for 9/11.
