The writer of the article “Only Love and Then Oblivion” is British writer Ian McEwan. McEwan is best known for his novels, such as Amsterdam (1998), Atonement (2001), and Enduring Love (1997). He has also written short stories, plays, and articles.

McEwan wrote two articles about the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The first, “Beyond Belief”, was published in The Guardian on 12th of September 2001 and presents McEwan’s immediate reaction to the attacks. “Only Love and Then Oblivion” appeared on September 15, 2001, also in The Guardian, showing the writer was very invested in the topic. McEwan also wrote an article in response to the July 7, 2005 London attacks titled “How could we have forgotten this was always going to happen?”.
