Background information

The article “Only Love and Then Oblivion” by Ian McEwan deals with the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. His main focus is the public’s response to the attacks and the final calls the victims made to their loved ones.

On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks took place in the U.S., attributed to the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda. The terrorists took control of four planes. Two of the planes crashed in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center from New York. The third hit the Pentagon, while the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers managed to take control. Almost 3000 people were killed in the attacks.
