In the rising action, we learn that Nancy Lee's parents have moved from the South to the North (p. 2, l. 1). We also learn that Nancy Lee is African American, but that she does not feel discriminated against: “Nancy Lee sometimes forgot she was colored herself.” (p. 2, l. 8). This is a foreshadowing element for Nancy Lee losing the scholarship because she is African American and thus experiencing open discrimination for the first time.
