Kamara
Kamara is the main character in the short story “On Monday of Last Week” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She is an Igbo woman in her twenties. She is well educated. Kamara graduated from Nsukka University in Nigeria, with a Chemistry degree. After graduation, she taught secondary school children in Enugu, while completing her master’s program. She immigrated to America after her husband, Tobechi, received his green card. While waiting for her own green card, she works as a babysitter.
Kamara feels slightly humiliated by having to take a “common job of wiping the buttocks of a stranger’s child” when she has a master’s degree. However, she accepts the job because she wants “a reason to leave the apartment every day.” This shows that she is...
