Style of writing

Part of your exam assignment asks you to focus on Rachel Cusk’s style of writing.

In “Mothers and teenagers: a modern tragedy” the author uses a casual and humorous tone and simple language. Cusk’s choice of words is meant to reflect both parent and teenage mentalities. Sometimes the author mimics the way parents and teenagers talk about each other: “She’s such a doormat, one of them says. When I forget something I need for school, I just text her and she comes all the way across town with it. She’s so – pathetic.” (ll. 204-208)

Another important feature of the author’s style of writing is the use of idioms together with literary devices which are more often found in fiction works than in non-fiction ones.:
