Intention

In his “Make Good Art” speech, Neil Gaiman’s intention is to offer practical tips on how to have a successful career in the arts field. To do this, he informs his audience of the most valuable pieces of advice he wishes he had known when he was starting out, as he states in the beginning of his speech:

So I thought I’d tell you everything I wish I’d known starting out, and a few things that, looking back on it, I suppose that I did know. And that I would also give you the best piece of advice I’d ever got, which I completely failed to follow. (ll. 21- 23)

Most of his advice focuses on the importance of not giving up in the face of adversity and relying on internal motivation to create art, always keeping the goal of creating unique art in mind.
