Rhetorical questions
In the article “Wild at heart: how one woman and her husband live out in the woods”, Stefanie Marsh uses rhetorical questions. For example, she asks the question “What have they been doing all day?” (l. 16) when she talks about having dinner with Miriam and Peter. The question helps to introduce a quote from Peter, which is a direct reply: “ ‘Nothing much. Waiting for you]’ ” (ll. 16-17). Moreover, the rhetorical question also helps to signal to the reader that Marsh is going to discuss what Miriam and Peter’s daily life is like.
Another rhetorical question also has the effect of hinting at the next topic Marsh is going to address: “one question remains unanswered: ‘Where are all the women?’ ” (ll. 23-25). Here, the rhetorical questi...
