The Covid-19 pandemic

Joe Biden held his Inaugural Address in January 2021 during a global pandemic. The Covid-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic in March 2020 and has caused millions of deaths in multiple countries including the United States. Joe Biden referred to 400,000 Americans who had died during the Covid-19 pandemic in his speech, one of the highest numbers globally at the time.

The 2021 Presidential Inauguration was held in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines, having a smaller audience than usual and being transmitted online. At the time, Biden claimed the country might be heading into what could be the “toughest and deadliest” period of the virus.
