Published in 2006, Wainaina’s essay remains relevant because negative stereotypes about Africa are still present today in the media and literature. These stereotypes lead to the widely held belief that African countries are not capable of helping themselves – but this is often untrue. In addition to this, it is possible that some of these depictions of Africa could lead to citizens of African countries believing that Western people and cultures are superior.
