AJ

AJ is one of the main characters in "How to Lose" by Victoria Patterson, even though we do not get direct access to his perspective, but only learn about him through Natalie's point of view. We gain insight into his character mostly through his words and actions, as well as Natalie’s interpretations of his feelings. AJ is the son of Natalie’s youngest sister.

He is eight years old and quite mature for his age: “ ‘Not too hot,’ he adds, reminding Natalie that he’s better off – at eight – filling the bathtub and gauging the temperature himself” (ll. 4-6). He has been living with his aunt and uncle for two years, since his mother died:

My sister, AJ’s mother, died last year of an accidental overdose. AJ found her. He said she looked like a mannequin of his mom. He can’t look at pictures yet. Therapist says this is normal.”...
