Narrator and point of view

The short story “We’re not Jews” by Hanif Kureishi is a third-person narration. The narrator is outside the plot and has limited knowledge, confined to the point of view of Azhar, one of the characters: “This peculiar fact of living history, vertiginously irrational and not taught in his school, struck his head like a hammer a gong, and echoed through his dreams night after night. How could such a thing be possible?” (ll. 125-128)

This means that the narrator knows only what Azhar thinks, observes, or finds out: “Yet he couldn’t make out what it was with him that made people say such things, or why, after so many contented hours at home with his mother, such violence had entered his world.” (ll. 63-65)
