Characters

The main character in the short story “Graveyard Shift” by James M. Reasoner is Frank (p. 82, l. 18). There are several hints that Frank is not the main character’s real name. Firstly, his last name is never mentioned. Secondly, after he kills the robber, Frank thinks about “a new town, a new name, a new job” (p. 83, l. 33). This suggests that Frank might be a fake name he has taken after being through a similar event. As the word “frank” means “honest”, it is quite possible that Frank has used it as a joke, as he is not honest at all, and this might not be his real name.

The robber also appears in the story several times. Through his attempted robbery, the plot twist is developed, and the readers find out what Frank is hiding.

Two policemen, Eddie and George, also appear briefly and interact with the main character. Frank’s wife, Becky, is also mentioned. Although her death is what drives Frank’s actions, Frank mentions her only once, at the end.
