Summary

The short story “Goldhawk” by Katherine Magyarody tells the story of Dinara Akhmatova, a computer programmer who is the only female employee at the company where she works.

Some of Dinara’s co-workers are fired from the company due to budget cuts, but she remains employed. Her male co-workers complain that the company kept her just because she is a woman and that her employment is meant to make the company look diverse. Another colleague argues that she is old and younger people have more need for employment. However, none of her co-workers know her age or which country she comes from. Dinara has emigrated three times and chose to finally settle in this country. She thinks about her past and the cultural differences between her home country and the West.
