Analysis

In this section, we will highlight the elements of our analysis of the text “Frida Boyelski’s Shiva” by Abigail Ulman.

The story follows a linear plot structure, while including narrative techniques like backstory and foreshadowing.

The characters include Frida Boyelski, the main character, and Ruthie/Rafael, as a secondary character.

The events take place in Australia. The social setting explores topics such as religion, parents’ expectations regarding their children, being transgender and misconceptions about being transgender, and gender stereotypes.

The events are described from the point of view of a third-person narrator, who not only describes the events but also voices the main character’s thoughts. The narrator is not always explicit about what happens in the story.

The language is simple, mixing narration with dialogue, which helps the reader understand more about the characters and the events.
