Rhetorical devices

Michelle Zauner uses several rhetorical devices in her article “Ever since my mom died, I cry in H Mart”. These devices serve to make the reader become familiar with aspects of Korean culture, especially related to food. They also highlight the author’s grief and her feeling that she has lost a part of her identity. 

Anecdotes

Towards the end of the article, Zauner presents a short anecdote about a Korean boy and his mother, who sit next to Zauner at the H Mart food court (ll. 97-106). Zauner seems to see something of her own relationship with her mother in their interactions, and she would like to tell the boy to appreciate his mother because life is short.
