The writer of the article “Ever since my mom died, I cry in H Mart” is Michelle Zauner, a Korean-American woman living in the US. Michelle Zauner was born in South Korea to a Korean-Jewish family. Her mother was Korean and her father was white (l. 13). Her family moved to Oregon when she was very young, and she is currently living in Philadelphia.

Zauner mentions in the article that her mother was her “access point for our Korean heritage” (ll. 13-14). Consequently, her mother’s death has left her feeling uprooted and disconnected from the Korean half of herself: “ ‘Am I even Korean anymore if there’s no one left in my life to call and ask which brand of seaweed we used to buy?’ ” (ll. 11-12).
