Summary

“The Three-Day Blow” by Ernest Hemingway starts with Nick, who walks through an orchard to visit his friend Bill, at his father’s cottage. Bill greets Nick on the porch and they admire the autumn scenery and comment on the windy weather. The two of them start drinking by the fire and Bill gets Nick some woolen socks. They discuss the baseball season, talking about the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants. Although they both prefer the Cardinals, the Giants always win, and Nick believes that the games might be rigged.

Then they discuss the books they are reading and their favorite authors. While Nick prefers Walpole, Bill prefers Chesterton. As they keep drinking, they toast the authors and imagine what it would be like to take the two authors fishing with them the next day, in Charlevoix.
