Discussion: Prevention of racial conflicts

Racial conflicts have been part of human history for a long time now, and even though many times legislation prevents and forbids racial discrimination, the problem of racism is still present in many societies, including western developed countries such as the US.

In your exam set, you are asked to discuss what the authorities can do to prevent racial conflict, taking your starting point in Text 3. First, we will look at the way Text 3 discusses the topic and then add some extra points you can use in your discussion of racial conflict prevention.

Text 3, “Ferguson’s horrors: Riots achieve nothing” is a comment written by Rich Lowry and published on the New York Post website, on August 15, 2014.

In his comment, Lowry argues that the riots following the Ferguson shootings can bring nothing good and that people should let justice take its course, instead of getting involved, complicating things and spiking unrest.
