In your exam set, you are also asked to discuss the way Paul Raushenbush engages the reader in Text 2, “What White People Can Do About the Killing of Black Men in America”, giving examples from the text. In order to answer this point, you should look at the language, tone and style of the author and at how the author puts forth his arguments.

Paul Raushenbush resorts to pathos very little in his article, only as a way of enhancing his arguments. You will notice that there are very little references to feelings and few indicators of emotional language. He talks about victims and their outrage to engage the readers that might be on the protesters’ side in the Ferguson riots, but also to make the white readers empathize with the African-American population:
