In part 1 of the exam question, you have to give an outline of the attitudes to copyright violation and illegal downloading as presented in texts 1 and 3. Text 1 argues that copyright violation and illegal downloading are an evolution and not a crime, while text 2 argues the issue is a serious one, affecting authors, and that people should not download or use others’ work without paying.

Written in 2010 and published in 2012, “The Pirate Bay’s Peter Sunde: It’s Evolution, Stupid” by Peter Sunde is an opinion article on copyright violation and illegal downloading in the entertainment industry, focusing on the case of The Pirate Bay (TPB), a website where people can upload and download files subject to copyright. 

The author, Peter Sunde, has a personal stake in the issue as he is the co-owner of the web platform TPB and has been sued and sentenced for copyright violation.

“You like my poems? So pay for them”

Published in 2007 on the website of the British newspaper The Guardian, “You like my poems? So pay for them” is an opinion article written by poet Wendy Cope.

As the heading of the article announces the author lobbies for respecting authors’ copyright. Cope’s attitude is critical of those who violate publishing rights; who post and download the work of authors (poets) without paying for it.

To argue for her opinion, Cope draws attention to the case of poems which are easily copied and posted online, without giving any credit to the authors. She claims that copyright violation and illegal downloading severally affect the income of poets...
