Discussion: Protection of the copyright

The last part of your assignment requires you to discuss whether copyright of music, texts and films can and should be protected, taking your starting point in one of the texts.

Can the copyright be protected?

One part of your discussion should focus on whether copyright of music, texts and films can be protected.

If you look at the three texts, you will notice that they all argue on some level that this is very hard to do. On the one hand, there are copyright laws (p. 4, l. 15) and authors or creators of movies, texts and films can go to court and defend their copyright rights as the case of Pete Sunde shows in text 1 (p. 1, ll. 20-28).

Should the copyright be protected?

Another part of your discussion should focus on whether copyright of music, texts and films should even be protected at all. As the three texts show, this is actually very debatable and a matter of personal opinion in most cases.

For instance, text 1 argues that copyright should not be protected because it indirectly leads to protecting a corrupt entertainment industry and affecting the democracy: "The problem here is that we’re allowing this dying industry to dictate the terms of our democracy." (p. 2, ll. 67-69); “The internet is being controlled by a corrupt industry. We need to stop it.” (p. 2, ll. 88-89);
