Presentation of the topic

The institution of marriage has come to be seen with skepticism by people nowadays. Modern societies are more about other individual priorities, such as a successful career than getting married. Furthermore, the higher divorce rates are rather discouraging even for those who do want to get married. For this reasons, many people prefer not to get married at all, even if a great deal of them have a partner with whom they cohabitate.

The three texts in your exam set present several attitudes to marriage; they focus on the decrease in popularity of marriage in modern society, but also on reasons why some people still choose to get married.

Text 1, “Why men and women get married” by Jenna Goudreau, presents the reasons why those who still get married nowadays, do it. Based on several surveys, the article shows that both women and men prefer to get married when they have secured their professional and financial status. Their reasons are a mix of love and peer pressure (the fact that their friends get married and their families’ pressures).

Text 2, "Not Married? The Odds That You Never Will Are Higher Than Ever" by Tanvi Misra, outlines that more and more people in the US are single and not married. This is mainly because people are either still waiting for an ideal match or they are not financially prepared for the costs of a wedding and supporting a family. The article mentions that research shows the likelihood of single people getting married eventually has dropped.

Text 3, “I don’t want to get married, and here’s why” by Becky Dickinson, presents the personal story of the author who does not feel the need to get married, even if she has been with the same partner for more than 10 years and they have three children together. The author’s reasons for refusing marriage are the financial costs involved in a wedding, but also the fact that she and her partner already form a family in practice.
