Comment: Douglas's behaviour towards Dawn

When characterising Douglas, it is important to pay attention to some points that can explain his behaviour towards Dawn, his adoptive mother.

Abandoned by his birth mother and by other eight foster mothers, Douglas is a child with a troubled past:

“He’s had a few troubles in his time and been badly let down. He wants a mum with no other children around and he doesn’t want a dad. He likes reading and football. Douglas will need a secure and loving environment to help him come to terms with past experiences” (ll. 58-61)

Terry, the interviewer, describes Douglas and we get a sense of his character. She mentions that:

“The male figures in his life have not been positive. Drink problems in the family, one too many step dads” (ll. 64-65).
