Themes and message

The main theme of the story “The Somebody” by Danny Santiago is finding one’s identity, which is enhanced by the theme of determination and courage. Both themes are accompanied by the motif of the unfortunate family relationships. Although the short story has an open ending, the message of the author is clear: it is very important for teenagers coming from poor neighborhoods and disorganized families to have a dream about the future, but transforming it into reality takes a lot of work and maturity.
