Summary

In this science fiction short story, we follow the main character’s use of rental hearts. In the world of this story, the protagonist can rent a heart like we rent DVDs.

It is the main character who tells the story, and it is told in the first person. We don’t know if the protagonist is male or female, however, will be addressed as "he" in these study notes.

The story begins with the narrator meeting Grace and deciding to rent a new heart after a break of ten year. Then, the narrator tells us how he began renting hearts and about his past relationships with both men and women.
