Science fiction elements

In the following section, we will turn our attention to the use of science fiction elements in “The Rental Heart”.  As with any work belonging to this genre, the science fiction elements are essential to giving the story authenticity, making the reader buy into the possibility of an alternate world.

The key science fiction element here is the option of renting a heart and all that comes with it: the rental shop itself and the mere possibility of using the metal heart instead of the real organ by simply opening your chest and placing it inside your body. “The rental Heart” transports us into a very different world. It is world where biological organs can be replaced by pieces of machinery.  This could be for example either a parallel universe or a world way into the future.
