Theme and message

The main theme of the poem “The Commission” by Roger McGough is inequality and the gap between the rich and the poor.

Inequality

As we have mentioned in previous sections, the two stanzas of the poem depict the two worlds in which the global population  lives in. The first stanza depicts the world of the rich, where people use food in an exaggerate manner for the sole purpose of taking a photograph. Notice that the main purpose of the campaign is not even related to food, but to mints that are supposed to erase the taste of food from your mouth. The poet does not explain what will happen with the food used in the photo shoot. We might as well assume that it is to be thrown away.
