Summary

In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, Montresor, the narrator of the story, informs readers that another man, Fortunato, has offended him by mocking his centuries-old family name. Now, Montresor is planning to take revenge on the man using his passion for wine. Fortunato enjoys drinking wine a lot and takes pride in being a knower of different varieties of wine.

One night, Montresor meets Fortunato on the street; the man is already drunk, and Montresor lures him to his palace, saying that he has come into the possession of what appears to be an old cask of Amontillado wine and that he was going to ask another man, Luchresi, to taste it and confirm the brand.
