Setting

In what follows, we will discuss the setting of the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe.

Time setting

The story takes place somewhere in Italy during springtime, fifty years before its narration.

Physical setting

The main physical setting is the vault of the “great stone palace” the narrator owns. However, the dark atmosphere is already set from the beginning when the two characters meet: “It was almost dark, one evening in the spring, when I met Fortunato in the street, alone.”

The depictions of the vault help with framing the short story into the horror genre and foreshadow the killing act of Montresor. The vault is “down under the ground, deep under the old walls” and it serves both as a wine cellar and a collective tomb for all the Montresors: “The earth which formed the floor was cold and hard. We were entering the last resting place of ..."
