Summary

The short story "School Run" by Kate Marsh tells the story about how the 1st person narrator comes to meet and marry her husband Magnus. The story begins with their first meeting, when she is five years old. Magnus is one of her brother’s friends and he drives with them to school every day. It is clear, that the two have a connection already then, and we are told that Magnus teaches the narrator how to read by spelling shop-signs on the daily drives to school. Already in the introducing paragraph, the narrator describes Magnus and accentuates how he is “an unusual boy” (ll. 10-11).

As the story moves on, the narrator grows older. She describes her teens and how her friends seem to have different interests and ways concerning boys and falling in love.  The narrator tells how she doesn’t think her own ways of thinking about Magnus “sound right” (l. 14).
