Throughout the story, the relationship between the narrator and Magnus is in focus. The story is built up around their relationship from when they meet as young children till they are a married couple:

I meet my future husband when I’m five years old. He’s my brother’s best friend and we give him a lift to school every day. I develop a crush on him… (ll. 1-2)
