The fragment from “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding illustrates a few pairs of opposing themes.

Civilisation vs. primitivism

One of the most important themes in the extract from “Lord of the Flies” is the one of civilisation against primitivism. The theme is illustrated by Ralph and Jack. While Ralph is the symbol of civilisation governed by rules, Jack becomes the symbol of primitivism, where everything is allowed.

Notice how Ralph is the one who created the rule of the conch: whoever has it in his possession will be granted the right to speak. He is always civilised when he talks, unlike Jack, who always hurries and disrespects him.
