Setting
The title of the story depicts the setting where the main action takes place – Okeechobee, a city in Florida.
Notice the way, on the road, the narrator describes the setting as slightly disturbing and crowded, perhaps a reflection of the tension she feels because of the conflict between her parents: “There are also boiled peanut stands, and the scruffy men that run them look you in the eye as you pass, no matter how fast the car is going.” (ll. 3-4)
