Throughout the short story, the setting is described with a vivid imagery, and the atmosphere that surrounds both the house and the mill is described.

As mentioned, the story takes place over the course of 22 years, and we are told that she is eleven in the year 1963 (l. 92) which makes the historical context very relevant, and can be a good addition to your analysis of the setting in the short story.

Social environment

Seeing that the story takes place in the Southern States in this particular historical period, it is worth mentioning the social environment in the short story.
