Social environment

Seeing that the story takes place in the Southern States in this particular historical period, it is worth mentioning the social environment in the short story.

The family is not particularly wealthy; they live in a house with a porch, and within walking distance to the mill where the father works hard and long hours:

“We leave on a porch light and head out. There’s not much light to see by as we walk down (…) Daddy comes to the door to get his supper, and the smell of the glue comes out with him” (ll. 36-38, 57)

Nevertheless, the segregated community is evident, as Jesse is not allowed inside their home. They follow the community’s general rules of segregation, however, yet Jesse is still a part of the family’s, and especially the Daddy’s, life:

“… somebody from work is coming to help him dig it up. (…) I hear them laughing and talking like the are off fishing instead of ankle deep in stink. (…) At lunchtime, Daddy takes two heaping plates of collards and cornbread and says he will eat on the back steps with Jesse. Now I kjnow he really likes Jesse.” (ll. 21-22, 26-30)

The social environment thus contributes to the descriptions of the climate and surroundings, it further emphasizes the historical context, and in all these points accentuates the general setting in the short story; a family living in a Southern state in 1960s America.
