Topic of the text

The article, "It's Only Me", deals with the topic of school shootings, and it analyzes the 2001 school shooting in Santee, where fifteen-year-old Charles Andrew Williams killed two and injured thirteen school mates at Santana High School. 

The article does not investigate what led Williams, the Santee shooter, to shoot his peers. Instead, the article focuses on the overall reasons why a child might come to this decision and on the disastrous consequences such a shooting can bring. Gibbs focuses on the following ideas:

  • The naïveté of the parents.
  • The lack of a pattern.
  • The measures taken by authorities.
  • The lack of pity for the shooter.
