Characteristics of the text

A key part of any analysis of a non-fiction text is to look at the characteristics of the text. That is, how the author argues, the language she applies and the rhetorical devices she use.

Hidden argumentation

The magazine article “It’s Only Me” is not written in an objective way. It is clear that Nancy Gibbs has a strong opinion on the Santee shooting and on the causes that lead to similar events; however, she never expresses her opinion openly, but through hidden argumentation.

When it comes to the lack of parental involvement, she does not openly explain that she considers them the main responsible. Instead, she uses a hint of irony to express her view: “The one thing that nearly every school shooting has in common is the chorus of parents declaring that "I never thought it could happen here."” (pp. 59-60, ll. 31-32, ll. 1-2); “Those are the conversations that matter most.” (p. 60, ll. 55-56)

Hidden argumentation is also used when Gibbs discusses the hasty decisions taken by politicians...
