In this type of exam, you must include 1-2 other sources from the internet. We recommend that you should settle on just finding one. Remember that analysing the main text (“Freedom of Speech and Right to Offend” by Brendan O’Neill) should be your priority, so be careful that finding additional sources doesn’t take up too much of your time.

You can use a search engine such as Google to find texts that deal with the topic. We recommend you find a blog post or an article from an online news outlet that is not too long or complicated. Remember to add a precise link to the source in a footnote in your paper, like this. [1]

“Free speech? Not at four in five UK universities”

For this task, we recommend that you focus on the article “Free speech? Not at four in five UK universities”[2] written by Louise Tickle and published on the website of the British newspaper The Guardian on February 2, 2015.

The article presents the results of a survey of universities in the UK regarding free speech, conducted by Spiked magazine, which looked at universities and ranked them green, amber or red according to the degree free speech was allowed.

The study uncovered that in many universities free speech was either not promoted or not respected. The study showed that it was not necessarily the university staff that hindered free speech, but rather student leaders or student unions.
