“Flotsam and Jetsam” by Alan Bissett does not fit the typical plot structure for a short story and reads more like an account of a few hours in the life of Scottish Kate as a tourist in Zanzibar.

More important than the plot is the overall theme of cultural differences manifested in the atmosphere, people, and views on politics, economy, and society. This is the reason why the setting is crucial in the story. Without contrasting two very different settings -Scotland and Zanzibar- the story would not have the same impact.

A second important aspect you need to consider in your analysis is the way the title of the text reflects the protagonist's mood and even her touristic experience.
