The first thing you might have noticed about the story is that the year when the action unfolds is not mentioned.

The physical setting is not mentioned, but we can easily assume that the story is set in the couple’s house, probably their living room.

Social setting

The social setting of the story is very important, as it touches upon the universal issue of the conflict between spouses. In this case, the conflict is rooted in the lack of communication between husband and wife; because they do not express their feelings openly, but they become frustrated with each other and with their life as a couple. The husband feels that his life is passing by and that he is missing great opportunities:

If she wasn't around, I'd be doing something interesting right now. I'd be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I'd be starring in the latest Hollywood...
