The speaker of this 2016 immigration speech is Donald Trump. At the time of the speech, Donald Trump was the Republican Party nominee for the US presidential elections.

He was a well-known business man and TV personality and not a career politician, something he uses to build his credibility within the speech: “Because I am not a politician, because I am not beholden to any special interest, I will get this done for you and your family.” (ll. 354-355). However, he had been a supporter of the Republican Party and Republican views for several years, often commenting on political issues in the media.

The US Republican Party is one of the two major American political parties in the country, together with the Democratic Party which is its historical opponent. Republican policies can be described as liberal in terms of economy and conservative regarding other socio-political aspects. They support trade and a free market, a strong defense, and individualism, but are conservative because they want to restrict social welfare, support the traditional family, and oppose gun control. In recent years, they have also taken a strong position against illegal immigration.
