Outer characterization

Hasina is Nazneen's younger sister in Monica Ali's novel Brick Lane. Although she is physically distant from the main setting of the story, her character plays a significant role through her letters, which provide a contrasting perspective to Nazneen's life. Hasina was born in the same Bangladeshi village as Nazneen, Gouripur. She is described as a very beautiful woman: “At the age of sixteen, when her beauty was becoming almost unbearable to own or even to look at” (p. 10).
