Composition

When analyzing the lyrics of “Brenda’s Got A Baby” by Tupac Shakur, you can always look at them as poems. For this reason, we need to look at both the outer composition and the inner composition of the song.

Outer composition

The lyrics of the song start with a repetition which functions as a chorus - “Brenda’s got a baby” (p. 167, ll. 1-2).

The lyrics continue as a narrative of Brenda’s story. The lines vary a lot in length and mix slant rhymes and couplets. Here is an example of an imperfect, slant rhyme:

“(That's not our problem, that's up ta Brenda's family)
Well let me show ya how it affects tha whole community (p. 167, ll. 7-8)

An example of a couplet is:

“But oh, that's a thought, my own revelation
Do whatever it takes ta resist tha temptation (p. 167, ll. 13-14)
