Summary

The short story “Blackberries” by Leslie Norris presents a couple of days in a young boy’s life. The boy begins his day by going to a barbershop for the first time with his mother. The boy finds the experience strange but fascinating. He is a little bit frightened at first but then becomes distracted by playing with the gown that covers him and making the tufts of hair on it fall to the floor.

The boy and his mother then go shopping. The boy waits patiently while his mother talks to acquaintances and buys groceries. They then go to buy the boy a cap like his cousin’s, which the boy wants very much. At home, the boy spends time with his father while the man eats dinner. Afterwards, he shows his father his new cap, and his father tells him they will go on a walk together the following Sunday.
