Barack Hussein Obama II (b. 1961) is an American politician. From 2009 to 2017, he served as the 44th President of the United States and he was the first African American to hold the office. After his two terms as President, he was succeeded by Donald Trump.

In 1996, Obama was elected as a member of the Illinois Senate. In 2004, he became a member of the US Senate, a seat which he resigned upon being elected President. In January, 2008, Obama defeated Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton and became the party's nominated candidate for the presidency of the US.

Barack Obama’s political affiliation is Democratic. The Democratic Party, one of the two major political parties in the US, advocates for social and economic equality, for liberalism, and for a state that supports those who cannot support themselves. The rival Republican Party advocates for the rights of the individual rather than for the rights of the community.
